How Does The Champions League Work?

Despite the previous season’s Champions League Final generally taking place in May, the next season’s competition starts just a few weeks later. Preliminary qualifying rounds usually begin in June, with the first qualifying round starting in the first week of July. There are a total of five qualifying rounds — Preliminary Round, First Qualifying Round, Second Qualifying Round, Third Qualifying Round and Play-Off Round — before the group stages commence.

A total of 32 teams enter at the group stages and are divided into eight groups of four. Each team faces each other twice over the course of the groups, once at home and once away and who progresses to the knockout round is dependant on the number of points earned from those fixtures. Teams are awarded three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. The two teams that finish with the highest points totals will progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League, while the team in third is demoted to the Europa League. The team that finishes bottom of their group is eliminated from European football altogether.

When it comes to the knockout phase, the 16 remaining teams are drawn against each other based on their seed (1st in the group are seeded, 2nd in the group are unseeded). Teams will then face each other over a two-legged tie where they each get home advantage in one of the fixtures. This format is repeated in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, although seeding is not a factor in the draw at this point.

Teams progress to the next round if they win on aggregate over the two legs and must win three knockout ties before reaching the Champions League Final. Unlike in previous years, away goals do not apply during the knockout rounds and the outcome is decided solely on the final score at the end of the two 90 minutes. The final is decided over one match at a neutral venue where the winner is crowned champions of Europe.
