Ligue 1 Format & Schedule
As previously mentioned, Ligue 1 is the top league in French soccer and features the top 20 teams in the country each season. The two teams that finish 19th and 20th are relegated from Ligue 1 at the end of each season and replaced by the two teams that win automatic promotion from Ligue 2 in the following campaign.
A third team could also be relegated. The team that finishes 18th in the table will be forced to play a relegation play-off against the winner of the play-offs in Ligue 2. This play-off is comprised of two games where both teams will play at home once and the aggregate winner will secure their place in Ligue 1 in the following season.
Towards the top of the table, teams are competing for the ultimate prize of winning the Ligue 1 title and being crowned champions of France. Beneath that, each of the top three also qualifies for the Champions League in the following season. The team that finishes fourth will earn qualification to the Europa League, while fifth takes a place in the Europa Conference League. There is an additional Europa League place available in France that is given to the winner of the Coupe de France. However, if the Coupe de France winners finish the season in one of the top four places in Ligue 1, the team in fifth place will enter the Europa League and sixth will have a place in the Europa Conference League.
There is a total of 380 games played over the course of a Ligue 1 season, with each team having to navigate their way through 38 fixtures. Those 38 fixtures are made up of two matches against each of the other 19 teams in the division, one at home and one away, totalling 19 home fixtures and 19 away fixtures each. Teams are fighting to earn points for their results with three for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. The league table will be decided by the number of points each team accumulates by the end of the season.
